Overview

AD-IRF-1 is a recombinant adenoviral vector engineered to overexpress human or murine interferon regulatory factor-1 (IRF-1), a nuclear transcription factor involved in immune response, tumor suppression, and apoptosis. The drug induces high-level IRF-1 expression in targeted cells, which leads to apoptotic cell death especially in cancer cells, such as those of esophageal adenocarcinoma, by activating caspase-dependent pathways and upregulating multiple immunomodulatory genes. Preclinical studies in vitro demonstrated induction of apoptosis, and in vivo studies in murine cancer models indicated modest tumor growth inhibition. The agent is primarily used experimentally to deliver IRF-1 gene therapy for cancer research and does not have an established approved clinical indication.
