Overview

Ad26.COV2.S is a recombinant, replication-incompetent human adenovirus type 26 (Ad26) vector-based vaccine developed for the prevention of COVID-19. It delivers the gene encoding the full-length spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2 in a stabilized conformation into human cells. The expressed spike protein triggers an immune response that includes both humoral and cellular immunity, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies and activation of T cells against SARS-CoV-2. The vaccine was originally developed by Janssen Vaccines (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson), requires only one dose for primary immunization but can be administered as a two-dose regimen for increased efficacy, and does not require ultra-cold storage[1][3][5][6].
