Overview
Ad5-EBOV is a recombinant, replication-deficient adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vector-based vaccine expressing the glycoprotein (GP) of the Ebola virus (specifically the 2014 Zaire Makona strain). Co-developed by CanSino Biologics and the Institute of Bioengineering at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS) in China, the vaccine was designed to provide rapid protection during the West African Ebola outbreak. It was the first Ebola vaccine to be approved for emergency use and national stockpiling by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) in 2017. The vaccine works by utilizing the Ad5 vector to deliver the Ebola GP gene into host cells, triggering both humoral and cellular immune responses against the virus.
