Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ad5-nCoV is a recombinant adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vector-based vaccine developed by CanSino Biologics in collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology. The vaccine utilizes a replication-deficient Ad5 vector to deliver the genetic sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein into host cells. Once expressed, the spike protein induces both neutralizing antibodies and T-cell mediated immune responses to protect against COVID-19. Ad5-nCoV was the first COVID-19 vaccine to enter clinical trials in China and has been developed in both intramuscular (Convidecia) and inhaled aerosol (Convidecia Air) formulations. The inhaled version is designed to induce mucosal immunity in the respiratory tract in addition to systemic immunity.
