Overview

Adalimumab is a recombinant human monoclonal antibody that acts as a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor. It is used to treat various chronic autoimmune and inflammatory conditions including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), plaque psoriasis (PsO), hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and uveitis. Adalimumab binds specifically to TNF-alpha and blocks its interaction with the p55 and p75 cell surface TNF receptors. This inhibition reduces inflammation and immune-mediated tissue damage in affected diseases. The drug was originally developed by AbbVie and was first approved in 2002 under the brand name Humira.
