Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aceduo is a topical fixed-dose combination gel containing the third-generation synthetic retinoid adapalene (0.1%) and the oxidizing antimicrobial agent benzoyl peroxide (2.5%). Developed for the treatment of acne vulgaris, Aceduo combines two complementary mechanisms of action to target multiple pathophysiological pathways of acne. Adapalene acts as a selective agonist of nuclear retinoic acid receptors (specifically RAR-beta and RAR-gamma), modulating gene expression to normalize follicular keratinization, promote skin cell turnover, and exert anti-inflammatory effects. Benzoyl peroxide functions as a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent by releasing free oxygen radicals that oxidize bacterial proteins, particularly targeting Cutibacterium acnes, while also providing keratolytic and desquamative properties. This synergistic combination effectively reduces both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions with a favorable tolerability profile.
