AdEcSOD is a replication-deficient adenoviral gene therapy vector designed to deliver and overexpress human extracellular superoxide dismutase (EcSOD, also known as SOD3). Developed primarily by researchers at the University of Iowa, AdEcSOD functions as an antioxidant therapeutic by enzymatically scavenging extracellular superoxide radicals ($O_2^{\bullet-}$), converting them into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. This reduction in oxidative stress helps preserve nitric oxide bioavailability and modulate downstream signaling pathways such as HIF-1\u03b1 and VEGF. AdEcSOD has been extensively investigated in preclinical animal models for a variety of conditions, including breast cancer metastasis, pancreatic cancer, hypertension, subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced vasospasm, liver cirrhosis-associated portal hypertension, and pulmonary fibrosis.
