AdEcSOD-ΔHBD is a replication-deficient adenoviral gene therapy vector that delivers a truncated form of human extracellular superoxide dismutase (EcSOD, or SOD3) lacking the heparin-binding domain (ΔHBD). Unlike wild-type EcSOD, which anchors to cell surfaces and the extracellular matrix via its heparin-binding domain, the truncated EcSOD-ΔHBD protein is secreted and remains in the circulation or extracellular fluid. This allows it to act as a highly efficient soluble scavenger of superoxide radicals. AdEcSOD-ΔHBD has been investigated in preclinical research for its potential to suppress breast cancer metastasis, inhibit pancreatic cancer growth by reducing HIF-1α accumulation, and modulate oxidative stress in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions such as hypertension and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
