Overview

Adela is a branded generic version of alfacalcidol, a synthetic vitamin D analogue developed and marketed by Getz Pharma. As a prodrug, alfacalcidol is rapidly converted in the liver by the enzyme 25-hydroxylase into calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3), which is the active form of vitamin D. This conversion does not require the kidneys, making it particularly effective for patients with renal impairment. Calcitriol acts by binding to the vitamin D receptor (VDR), which regulates the transcription of genes involved in calcium and phosphate metabolism. Adela is indicated for the treatment of conditions resulting from impaired vitamin D metabolism, including renal osteodystrophy, hypoparathyroidism, hyperparathyroidism with bone disease, various forms of rickets and osteomalacia, and osteoporosis.
