Ademetionine butanedisulfonate is a stable salt form of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe), an endogenous amino acid derivative present in virtually all body tissues and fluids. It serves as a primary methyl donor in transmethylation reactions and a precursor for physiological sulfur compounds (such as glutathione, cysteine, taurine, and coenzyme A) via transsulfuration. In the liver, ademetionine regulates hepatocyte membrane fluidity by methylating membrane phospholipids and enhances detoxification by increasing glutathione levels. It is clinically approved for the treatment of intrahepatic cholestasis in pre-cirrhotic and cirrhotic states, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and depressive symptoms.
