Overview

Adenosine cyclophosphate (also known as cyclic AMP or cAMP) is a naturally occurring intracellular second messenger that plays a critical role in mediating cellular responses to various extracellular signals, such as hormones and neurotransmitters. As a therapeutic agent, adenosine cyclophosphate is formulated as an injection and is approved in China for the treatment of cardiovascular and other conditions, including angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, myocarditis, cardiogenic shock, rheumatic heart disease, acute leukemia, chronic bronchitis, hepatitis, and psoriasis. Mechanistically, it acts as an agonist that binds to and activates the regulatory subunits of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (Protein Kinase A or PKA) and exchange proteins activated by cAMP (EPAC1 and EPAC2), thereby regulating downstream phosphorylation cascades, cellular metabolism, and gene expression.
