Overview

Atepodin is an intravenous formulation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an endogenous nucleotide that serves as the primary energy currency of cells. Developed by Fundación ACE in Spain, it is being investigated as a metabolic therapy for moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease (AD). The therapeutic rationale is based on the hypothesis that restoring brain ATP levels can counteract the mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced energy production characteristic of AD. In a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01163110), Atepodin was administered via 6-hour or 24-hour intravenous infusions to evaluate its safety, feasibility, and impact on brain metabolism (assessed via magnetic resonance spectroscopy) and cognitive function. The proof-of-concept study suggested that the treatment is feasible and safe, though larger studies are required to confirm clinical efficacy.
