Adenovirus-manganese superoxide dismutase is an experimental gene therapy modality that utilizes recombinant adenoviral vectors to deliver the manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD or SOD2) gene into target cells. MnSOD is a vital mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, thereby playing a central role in managing cellular oxidative stress. In the context of oncology, this therapy is designed to overexpress MnSOD to suppress tumor cell proliferation and induce apoptosis, as many cancer types exhibit reduced MnSOD activity. Beyond cancer, it is also investigated for its cytoprotective potential in mitigating tissue damage caused by reactive oxygen species in conditions such as ischemia-reperfusion injury and alcohol-induced liver disease.
