Adenovirus Specific T lymphocytes (ADV-VSTs) are a form of adoptive cellular immunotherapy used to treat adenovirus infections in immunocompromised patients, particularly following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or solid organ transplantation. This therapy involves the isolation and ex vivo expansion or direct selection of adenovirus-specific T cells from healthy seropositive donors, followed by infusion into the patient to restore antiviral immunity. ADV-VSTs can be derived from either the original stem cell donor or from a third-party haploidentical donor, especially in cases of umbilical cord blood transplantation where the original donor cells are unavailable[1][4][8]. The therapy has shown significant efficacy in treating adenoviral infections that are refractory to conventional antiviral medications, with clinical response rates of 81-91% reported in various studies[1][2][8]. ADV-VSTs work by expanding in vivo upon infusion, particularly in the presence of active adenoviral infection, and help clear the viral load without causing significant side effects or graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)[1][5][8].
