Adept

Adept is a 4% icodextrin solution, a cornstarch-derived, water-soluble branched glucose polymer. It is administered intraperitoneally as an adjunct to good surgical technique for the reduction of post-surgical adhesions, primarily in gynecological laparoscopic adhesiolysis. Its mechanism involves hydroflotation, where its colloidal osmotic action retains fluid in the peritoneal cavity for 3-4 days, creating a physical barrier between traumatized surfaces to minimize tissue apposition during healing. Adept was approved by the FDA in 2006 for gynecological laparoscopic adhesiolysis and by the European Union in 1999 as a medical device to reduce adhesions after abdominal surgery.
