Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Adiantum capillus-veneris extract, derived from the Southern maidenhair fern, is a botanical extract traditionally used in various folk medicine systems (such as Iranian traditional medicine, Ayurveda, and Unani) for respiratory, digestive, and inflammatory conditions. Phytochemical analysis reveals that the extract is rich in bioactive secondary metabolites, including flavonoids (such as rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol), phenolic acids, triterpenoids, saponins, and tannins. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that the extract possesses potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic properties. Notably, recent in vitro research has highlighted its potent antiviral activity against the influenza A virus (H1N1) strain, showing a synergistic effect when combined with the standard antiviral drug oseltamivir. It is currently investigated as a natural product or botanical extract rather than a targeted pharmaceutical development program.
