Overview

This is an experimental cell therapy being developed by Mayo Clinic for the treatment of moderate to severe medically refractory ulcerative colitis. The therapy consists of adipose-derived autologous mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) harvested from the patient's own adipose (fat) tissue. The cells are processed and then administered at doses of either 15 million or 30 million cells via intra-arterial delivery using interventional radiology to the inferior mesenteric artery. This innovative delivery method targets the affected area directly, which may enhance effectiveness and reduce side effects compared to standard intravenous administration. The mesenchymal stem cells are believed to work by regenerating damaged tissue and modulating the immune response, potentially addressing the root cause of ulcerative colitis rather than just alleviating symptoms. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase I, open-label clinical trial to assess safety and feasibility.
