Adipose-derived expanded stem cells (ASC) is an autologous cell therapy developed by the Instituto de Investigación Hospital Universitario La Paz for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence. The therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from the patient's own adipose tissue, which are then expanded ex vivo and administered via intralesional or periurethral injection. The proposed mechanism of action involves the regeneration of the urethral sphincter muscle and surrounding pelvic floor connective tissue. This is achieved through the multilineage differentiation potential of the MSCs, specifically their ability to undergo myogenic differentiation to restore the structural and functional integrity of the urinary sphincter. The therapy has been investigated in the Phase I/II HULPURO clinical trial (NCT01804153).
