Overview

This combination therapy consists of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (aMSCs) and a hyaluronan-based hydrogel, developed by Karolinska University Hospital and Uppsala University for the treatment of vocal fold scarring. In the primary clinical pilot study (NCT02622464), the aMSCs are harvested from the patient's bone marrow, expanded ex vivo, and then injected into the scarred vocal fold lamina propria. The hyaluronan gel serves as a biocompatible scaffold that provides immediate viscoelastic properties to the tissue, while the stem cells promote long-term regeneration and reduce fibrosis through paracrine signaling and extracellular matrix remodeling. The therapy is intended for patients with severe hoarseness or aphonia resulting from surgery, radiation, or inflammation.
