Overview

Adipose derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AD-MSCs) are multipotent stem/stromal cells isolated from human adipose (fat) tissue. They are capable of differentiating into various cell types including osteoblasts (bone), chondrocytes (cartilage), myocytes (muscle), and adipocytes (fat). AD-MSCs exhibit strong immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties by secreting a range of cytokines and growth factors such as VEGF, FGF, HGF, NGF, IL-1, IL-6 and IL-10. These properties make them attractive for regenerative medicine applications including wound healing; orthopedic conditions like bone defects; cardiovascular diseases; autoimmune disorders; and inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Compared to bone marrow-derived MSCs they are easier to obtain in higher yields with less invasive procedures[2][3][6]. AD-MSCs have low immunogenicity due to reduced MHC class I expression and can suppress lymphocyte proliferation[2][3]. Their clinical use is under investigation in multiple phase 1/2 trials for diverse indications.
