Adipose-derived platelets are an investigational cell therapy product consisting of functional, platelet-like cells generated *ex vivo* from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs). Developed primarily by researchers at Keio University, this technology aims to provide a sustainable and scalable alternative to donor-derived platelet transfusions, which are limited by a short shelf life and risks of immunogenicity or infection. The manufacturing process involves the differentiation of ASCs into megakaryocytes, which then undergo proplatelet formation and fragmentation to release platelets. These manufactured cells express essential surface markers such as CD41 (GPIIb) and CD61 (GPIIIa) and exhibit physiological hemostatic functions, including aggregation and thrombus formation in response to agonists like thrombin. The primary clinical focus is the treatment of thrombocytopenia, particularly in patients who have developed resistance to conventional platelet transfusions due to HLA alloimmunization.
