Overview

Adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is an autologous cell therapy consisting of a heterogeneous population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), endothelial progenitor cells, and immune cells, extracted from a patient's own adipose tissue. Developed and tested by Emory University in the MILES (Multicenter Trial of Stem Cell Therapy for Osteoarthritis) study, the therapy involves obtaining lipoaspirate via a mini-liposuction procedure, followed by enzymatic digestion and centrifugation (using the InGeneron Transpose RT system) to isolate the SVF pellet. The resulting cellular product is injected intra-articularly into the knee joint to treat osteoarthritis. The mechanism of action is thought to involve the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that modulate the joint environment and potentially promote tissue repair, although Phase 2/3 results indicated no superiority over corticosteroid injections for pain reduction at one year.
