Adipose mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) are autologous multipotent stromal cells harvested from adipose tissue, typically via lipoaspiration from the abdomen. These cells possess the capacity to differentiate into various mesodermal lineages, including chondrocytes, osteoblasts, and adipocytes. In therapeutic applications, particularly for knee osteoarthritis, AD-MSCs are utilized for their immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. They exert their effects primarily through paracrine signaling, secreting a variety of cytokines and growth factors that modulate the joint microenvironment, reduce inflammation, and potentially support cartilage repair. In the Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT04351932) sponsored by the Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil, autologous AD-MSCs are administered via intra-articular injection to treat grade II-III knee osteoarthritis, where they are evaluated for their ability to reduce pain and improve joint function.
