Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Hospital Regional Lic. Adolfo López Mateos for the treatment of critical COVID-19. These cells are harvested from adipose tissue and administered via intravenous infusion to patients in intensive care experiencing moderate to severe acute respiratory insufficiency. The primary mechanism of action involves the immunomodulation of the host's immune response to mitigate the 'cytokine storm'—a hyperinflammatory state characterized by the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines. By reducing systemic inflammation, the therapy aims to facilitate the resolution of respiratory failure and prevent multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).
