Adjuvanted quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (aIIV4) is a seasonal influenza vaccine designed to provide enhanced protection against four strains of the influenza virus: two Influenza A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and two Influenza B strains (Victoria and Yamagata lineages). The vaccine is formulated with the MF59 adjuvant, an oil-in-water emulsion composed of squalene, which is intended to boost the magnitude and breadth of the immune response. This enhancement is particularly critical for elderly populations and individuals with chronic medical conditions who may experience immunosenescence or a diminished response to standard non-adjuvanted vaccines. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection and works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin protein, thereby preventing infection and reducing the severity of influenza-related complications.
