Overview

The adjuvanted quadrivalent subunit inactivated cell-derived influenza vaccine (aQIVc) is a next-generation seasonal influenza vaccine developed by CSL Seqirus. It combines two advanced technologies: a mammalian cell-culture manufacturing process (using MDCK cells) and the MF59 adjuvant. Cell-based production avoids egg-adaptive mutations that can occur in traditional egg-based manufacturing, potentially leading to a better match between the vaccine and circulating viral strains. The MF59 adjuvant, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion, is designed to enhance and broaden the immune response, which is particularly beneficial for older adults (aged 65 and older) who may have a reduced response to standard vaccines due to immunosenescence. The vaccine is a quadrivalent subunit formulation containing purified hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens from four influenza strains: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata).
