Adult donor RBC concentrates (A-RBCs) are standard packed red blood cell units derived from adult blood donors, primarily composed of adult human red blood cells containing adult hemoglobin (HbA). In clinical practice, they are used for the treatment of anemia and to restore oxygen-carrying capacity. In the context of the BORN trial (NCT05100212), A-RBCs serve as the control arm in a study comparing them to cord blood-derived RBC concentrates for the prevention of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in extremely low gestational age neonates (ELGANs). The study investigates whether the higher oxygen affinity of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in cord blood RBCs can prevent the retinal hyperoxia and oxidative damage associated with the abrupt exposure to adult hemoglobin (HbA) following standard transfusions.
