AEG33783 is a small molecule neuroprotective agent originally developed by Aegera Therapeutics. It was designed to treat various forms of peripheral neuropathy, specifically those induced by chemotherapy (CIPN) and diabetes (DPN). The drug's primary mechanism of action involves the prevention of apoptosis (programmed cell death) in injured or stressed neuronal cells, thereby preserving nerve structure and function. Preclinical studies demonstrated that AEG33783 could not only prevent the onset of neuropathy but also reverse existing sensory deficits in animal models. The compound advanced into Phase I clinical trials to assess safety and pharmacokinetics in humans; however, development appears to have been discontinued following the acquisition of Aegera Therapeutics by Pharmascience in 2011.
