Overview

AEOL 11203 is a small molecule metalloporphyrin catalytic antioxidant developed by Aeolus Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It functions as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), mimicking the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes to mitigate oxidative and nitrative stress. The compound is designed with high lipophilicity to facilitate penetration of the blood-brain barrier and has demonstrated oral bioavailability. In preclinical studies using MPTP-induced mouse models of Parkinson's disease, AEOL 11203 showed neuroprotective effects, including the preservation of striatal dopamine levels and the prevention of dopaminergic neuronal loss.
