Overview

AER-001 is a humanized monoclonal antibody designed to prevent tissue scarring by directly inhibiting collagen fibrillogenesis. Unlike traditional anti-fibrotic agents that target signaling pathways such as TGF-beta, AER-001 binds specifically to the C-telopeptide region of the alpha1 chain of type I collagen. This binding prevents the lateral association of collagen molecules, thereby blocking the formation of mature collagen fibrils and subsequent dense scar tissue. It has been primarily investigated for the reduction of subconjunctival scarring following glaucoma filtration surgery (trabeculectomy), where excessive fibrosis often leads to surgical failure. The drug was originally developed by Aerie Pharmaceuticals, which was subsequently acquired by Alcon.
