Overview

AeroLEF is an inhaled, nebulized formulation of fentanyl developed by YM BioSciences for the management of moderate to severe acute pain, including breakthrough cancer pain. The product is unique in its dual-release profile, delivering a combination of non-encapsulated (free) fentanyl for rapid onset of action and liposome-encapsulated fentanyl for sustained analgesia. This design aims to provide the fast relief typically associated with intravenous administration while extending the duration of the analgesic effect. The delivery is managed via a proprietary patient-controlled nebulizer system that allows for titration of the dose. Clinical development reached Phase 2 trials; however, the program was discontinued following the acquisition of YM BioSciences by Gilead Sciences in 2013.
