Overview

Aerolytic (AER-002) is a recombinant human secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (rhSLPI) that was under development by Aerovance for the treatment of cystic fibrosis. As a serine protease inhibitor, its primary mechanism of action involves the neutralization of neutrophil elastase, an enzyme that, when present in excess in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients, leads to chronic inflammation, mucus hypersecretion, and progressive lung tissue destruction. The drug was designed for delivery via inhalation to provide high local concentrations in the airways, aiming to restore the protease-antiprotease balance and preserve lung function. Development of Aerolytic was discontinued following the cessation of operations by Aerovance in 2011.
