Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aerosolized beractant is an investigational formulation of the natural bovine pulmonary surfactant **Survanta** (beractant), specifically developed for delivery via nebulization. Developed by Dr. Beena G. Sood at Wayne State University, this formulation is intended to treat respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm neonates. The primary innovation lies in its delivery method; while traditional surfactant replacement therapy requires invasive endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation, aerosolized beractant is administered during non-invasive ventilation (NIV) using vibrating mesh or jet nebulizers. This approach aims to provide the benefits of early surfactant therapy while minimizing the risks associated with invasive procedures. The drug functions by lowering surface tension at the alveolar air-liquid interface, thereby preventing alveolar collapse during expiration and improving oxygenation. It has been granted orphan drug designation by the FDA.
