Overview

Aerva lanata aqueous extract is a botanical preparation derived from the leaves of the *Aerva lanata* plant, commonly known as Mountain Knotgrass or Polpala. Traditionally utilized in African and Ayurvedic medicine for the management of diabetes mellitus and its associated complications, the extract functions by uncompetitively inhibiting alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, key enzymes responsible for carbohydrate hydrolysis. This inhibition helps to reduce postprandial glucose absorption. Furthermore, the aqueous extract exhibits potent antioxidant activity, particularly in scavenging ABTS radicals, which is attributed to its rich phenolic composition and contributes to its protective effects against oxidative stress in diabetic conditions.
