Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AERx insulin is an inhaled liquid formulation of regular human insulin delivered via the AERx insulin Diabetes Management System (AERx iDMS). Developed through a collaboration between Aradigm Corporation and Novo Nordisk, the system utilizes a proprietary nozzle technology to create a fine aerosol of liquid droplets (1-3 μm) for deep lung delivery and systemic absorption. This delivery method provides a rapid onset of action, mimicking the pharmacokinetic profile of fast-acting insulin analogs. The drug targets the insulin receptor to regulate glucose metabolism in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although it reached Phase III clinical trials, development was discontinued by Novo Nordisk in 2008.
