AF292 is a small molecule selective agonist of the muscarinic M1 acetylcholine receptor (CHRM1), originally developed by the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) under the leadership of Dr. Abraham Fisher. The compound is part of a series of muscarinic ligands designed to address cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration in central nervous system (CNS) disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. By selectively activating M1 receptors, which are predominantly located in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex, AF292 aims to enhance cholinergic neurotransmission, improve memory and learning, and potentially provide neuroprotective effects. The drug was licensed to TorreyPines Therapeutics (TPTX) in the United States, and following the dissolution of TPTX, the rights were transferred to Neuroscience Optimized Solutions (NOS) in Austria.
