afatinib + talcum powder is a combination treatment approach being evaluated for patients with EGFR-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and malignant pleural effusion. Developed by Center Trials & Treatment Europe, the therapy involves the intrapleural administration of a suspension containing talcum powder and afatinib. Talcum powder acts as a sclerosing agent, inducing chemical inflammation and pleurodesis to cause adhesion between the visceral and parietal pleura, thereby preventing the recurrence of fluid accumulation. Afatinib is a second-generation, irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets the ErbB family of receptors, including EGFR (ErbB1), HER2 (ErbB2), and ErbB4. The combination aims to provide both mechanical control of the effusion and localized anti-tumor activity against metastatic cells in the pleural cavity.
