AFC-2 is a specific fucoidan fraction isolated from the brown algae *Ascophyllum nodosum*, which is found along the North Atlantic coast. It is a sulfated polysaccharide primarily composed of fucose and xylose, with a sulfate content of approximately 17.0% and sulfation occurring predominantly at the C2 hydroxy group. In preclinical studies using hyperlipidemic mouse models, AFC-2 demonstrated significant anti-hyperlipidemic effects comparable to atorvastatin. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of lipoprotein-metabolism-related enzymes and oxidative stress-related enzymes, as well as the preservation of gut flora diversity. It is being investigated for its potential therapeutic application in treating hyperlipidemia and associated metabolic disorders.
