Overview

Aflibercept + ranibizumab is a combination of two anti-VEGF biologic drugs used in ophthalmology to treat retinal vascular diseases such as neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema, and retinal vein occlusion. Both agents inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), thereby reducing abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the retina. - **Aflibercept** is a recombinant fusion protein composed of portions of human VEGF receptors 1 and 2 fused to the Fc region of human IgG1. It acts as a decoy receptor for VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and placental growth factor (PlGF), preventing their interaction with endogenous receptors on endothelial cells[5][3]. - **Ranibizumab** is a monoclonal antibody fragment that binds all isoforms of VEGF-A with high affinity, blocking its activity on endothelial cell surface receptors[4]. Both drugs are administered by intravitreal injection and have been shown to improve visual outcomes in patients with wet AMD and other retinal diseases[2][4]. They are not typically co-formulated or marketed together but may be studied or used sequentially or comparatively in clinical practice.
