Aflurax

Aflurax is a pectin-based, raft-forming anti-reflux agent developed by Ferrosan for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The formulation contains pectin and antacid bases that, upon contact with gastric acid, form a neutral, buoyant physical barrier (a 'raft') on the surface of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a mechanical barrier to prevent the reflux of acid and food into the esophagus. Aflurax has been evaluated in clinical trials for the on-demand relief of heartburn in patients with endoscopy-negative reflux disease and as a maintenance therapy to prevent the recurrence of erosive esophagitis. Unlike systemic proton pump inhibitors, Aflurax acts locally and non-systemically to provide symptomatic relief.
