**AFO-18** is an investigational therapeutic HIV-1 peptide vaccine originally developed by Statens Serum Institut. It contains 18 synthetic HIV-1 T-cell epitope peptides, comprising 15 conserved, relatively subdominant CD8 T-cell epitopes and three CD4 helper T-cell epitopes derived from HIV-1 Gag, Pol, Nef, Env, Vpu, and Vif. In clinical use, the peptide vaccine was formulated with the cationic liposomal adjuvant CAF01, composed of dimethyldioctadecylammonium and trehalose 6,6-dibehenate, to stimulate cellular immunity and induce new HIV-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses in people with chronic HIV-1 infection.
