AFP gene hepatocellular carcinoma vaccine is an investigational cancer vaccine designed to target alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), which is highly re-expressed in 70-80% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases. The vaccine works by inducing cytotoxic T-lymphocytes that specifically target and attack AFP-expressing tumor cells. It aims to generate immune responses against AFP, a protein normally produced during fetal development but often re-expressed in liver cancer cells. Research has shown that AFP plays important roles in immune modulation that promote tumorigenesis, including: - Suppressing T-cell-dependent immune reactions - Affecting monocytes by suppressing inflammatory processes - Increasing production of prostaglandin E2 - Reducing secretion of inflammatory cytokines like TNFα and IL-1β - Triggering polarization of M0 macrophage into M2-like phenotype through the PI3K/Akt pathway
