Overview
Afriven (also known as Afriven 10) is an equine-derived polyvalent antivenom developed and manufactured by VINS Bioproducts. It consists of purified equine immunoglobulin F(ab')2 fragments obtained from the plasma of horses hyperimmunized against the venoms of medically important African snake species. Afriven is indicated for the treatment of snakebite envenomation caused by various venomous snakes of the Viperidae and Elapidae families in sub-Saharan Africa, including puff adders (*Bitis arietans*), forest cobras (*Naja melanoleuca*), black mambas (*Dendroaspis polylepis*), and spitting cobras (*Naja nigricollis*). The polyclonal antibodies in the antiserum bind to and neutralize the toxic components of the snake venom, preventing systemic toxicity, tissue damage, and life-threatening complications.
