Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aftera is an emergency contraceptive containing 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin. It is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse or the known or suspected failure of a primary contraceptive method. The drug primarily functions by inhibiting or delaying ovulation through the suppression of the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. It may also interfere with fertilization or alter the transport of sperm or ova. Aftera is intended for use as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours of the event. Originally developed and marketed by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, the brand was sold to Foundation Consumer Healthcare in 2017 as part of a strategic divestiture of Teva's women's health portfolio.
