Overview

Aftobetin (also known as aftobetin hydrochloride) is a small molecule fluorescent ligand developed by Cognoptix for the early detection of Alzheimer's disease. It is the pharmaceutical component of the SAPPHIRE II system, a drug-device combination. Aftobetin is applied topically as an ophthalmic ointment, where it penetrates the eye and binds specifically to beta-amyloid protein aggregates in the lens. The SAPPHIRE II laser scanner then measures the fluorescence emitted by the bound ligand to quantify amyloid levels, which serve as a biomarker for Alzheimer's pathology. The technology was licensed from Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women's Hospital.
