Overview

Afungil is a branded antifungal medication containing fluconazole, developed and manufactured by Laboratorios Senosiain. It belongs to the triazole class of antimycotics. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase (ERG11/CYP51), which is essential for the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of the fungal cell membrane. The depletion of ergosterol leads to increased membrane permeability and subsequent cell death. Afungil is indicated for a wide range of fungal infections, including dermatomycosis, cryptococcosis (such as meningitis), and various forms of candidiasis (mucosal, systemic, and vaginal), particularly in immunocompromised patients. It is available in both oral (capsules) and intravenous (injectable solution) formulations.
