Overview

Afunginal is a branded formulation of nystatin, a polyene antifungal antibiotic developed and marketed by Remed Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Derived from *Streptomyces noursei*, the drug exerts its antifungal effect by binding to ergosterol, a primary sterol in fungal cell membranes. This binding creates pores or channels in the membrane, leading to increased permeability, leakage of intracellular contents (such as potassium), and ultimately fungal cell death. Afunginal is primarily indicated for the treatment of candidiasis, including oral, intestinal, and esophageal infections, as well as superficial fungal infections caused by *Candida* species. It is available in multiple formulations, including oral suspensions and tablets.
