Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AFX-2 is a proprietary, standardized extract of North American ginseng (*Panax quinquefolius*) developed by Afexa Life Sciences Inc. It was primarily investigated as an oral therapeutic agent for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The extract contains a specific profile of ginsenosides and polysaccharides that are believed to exert anti-leukemic effects by inducing apoptosis in leukemic B-cells and modulating the host's immune response. A Phase 1b open-label, dose-ranging study (NCT01130350) was conducted to evaluate the safety and tolerability of AFX-2 in adults with early-stage CLL who did not yet require standard chemotherapy. Following the acquisition of Afexa Life Sciences by Valeant Pharmaceuticals (now Bausch Health) in 2011, clinical development for this indication appears to have ceased.
