Overview

AG0301-COVID19 is a plasmid DNA vaccine developed by AnGes, Inc. in collaboration with Osaka University and Takara Bio for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine consists of a circular DNA plasmid that encodes the spike (S) protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Upon intramuscular administration, the plasmid is taken up by host cells, which then utilize their own machinery to express the spike protein. This expression triggers the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies and activate T-cell responses against the virus. While the candidate progressed through early clinical stages, AnGes announced in late 2022 that it would discontinue the development of its first-generation DNA vaccine candidates, including AG0301, due to the evolving landscape of the pandemic and the superior efficacy demonstrated by other vaccine platforms.
