AG200-ER

AG200-ER (also known as AG200-ER SmP) is an investigational combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) transdermal patch system developed by Agile Therapeutics. It is specifically designed for an extended-cycle regimen intended to increase the time between withdrawal bleeding episodes. The system utilizes Agile's proprietary Skinfusion technology to deliver a combination of levonorgestrel (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). The regimen involves the use of the standard Twirla patch for the initial weeks, followed by a smaller, lower-dose patch (SmP) to maintain hormonal levels over an extended period. Its primary mechanism of action involves the suppression of gonadotropins, leading to the inhibition of ovulation, alongside thickening of cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration and alterations to the endometrium to discourage implantation. As of the latest pipeline update, development of the AG200-ER program is currently on hold.
